McInnis began his career as a Geologist at Cominco Ltd.
from 1968 to 1972 and later worked as an Exploration Manager-Base & Precious Metals at Pan Ocean Oils Ltd.
from 1977 to 1981.
He obtained his undergraduate degree from the University of British Columbia in 1969.
