SAM works closely with the University to enhance development of their intellectual property. Through external partners, they develop spin-out firms, joint ventures and industry-led deals. They draw on the University's areas of expertise and have invested in ventures in oil and gas exploration, pharmaceuticals, nanotechnology and optoelectronics. Actual spin-out firms have been active in areas such as electromagnetic sensing services designed to detect the presence of offshore oil and gas, large-scale project management software, new methods for the synthesis of peptides and proteins, drug evaluation, testing and discovery in CNS disorders, photonic crystal technology, insect pest control solutions, optical solutions via laser wavelength conversion and integrated optical circuit technology, specialty optical fiber, cancer and heart disease drug treatment through histone deacetylase (HDAC) inhibitors, and gamma-ray detector systems.
