Microsoft Corporation is wereldwijd n° 1 op het gebied van het ontwerp, de ontwikkeling en de verkoop van besturingssystemen voor software voor de PC en servers. Het concern ontwikkelt tevens een activiteit op het gebied van de bouw en de verkoop van computermateriaal. De omzet per activiteit is als volgt onderverdeeld:

- verkoop van besturingssystemen en applicatie-ontwikkelingstools (42,9%): met name bedoeld voor servers (Azure, SQL Server, Windows Server, Visual Studio, System Center, GitHub, enz.) en microcomputers (Windows);

- ontwikkeling van cloud-gebaseerde softwareapplicaties (37,7%): programmapakketten voor productiviteit (Microsoft 365; Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, OneNote, Publisher en Access), voor geïntegreerd beheer en klantrelatiebeheer (Dynamics 365), voor het online delen en beheren van bestanden (OneDrive), en voor eenduidige en collaboratieve communicatie (Microsoft Teams);

- andere (19,4%): met name verkoop van softwarelicenties (Windows), tablets (Microsoft Surface), spelconsoles en videogamesoftware (Xbox), computeraccessoires, enz.

51,3% van de omzet wordt in de Verenigde Staten.
