She previously served as the Chief Executive Officer & Vice Chancellor of The Open University, Chairman of The Association of Commonwealth Universities, Independent Non-Executive Director of ADvTECH Ltd., Director of the International Association of Maritime Universities, Vice Chancellor of the University of KwaZulu-Natal, and Trustee of The Royal Anniversary Trust.
Gourley holds graduate degrees from the University of South Africa and The University of Nottingham Malaysia Campus.
