Tribune invests with the objective to strengthen their existing businesses of newspaper publishing, television broadcasting or syndicated and online media. They seek to build shareholder value by working with and investing in outside companies that are developing complementary or new segments which they are not pursuing directly. Their criteria for investing include: access to technologies, content, markets or capabilities that enhance our core media businesses, entry point into a new or related market, financial return, both through ownership stake and through enhancement of their business, opportunity for Tribune to contribute to a company's success factors or reduce their risk factor, a clear path to learning, and an identifiable process to communicate that learning within Tribune, and provides a placeholder in segments of the media business that are in a developmental stage and for which the timing is not appropriate for Tribune to pursue it directly.
