Joel Bloomer

Mr. Joel Bloomer, CFA, is Head of Discretionary Equity Strategies at Morningstar Australasia Pty Ltd.
He also works with multi-asset strategy portfolio managers and is a member of Morningstar’s Global Equity Portfolio Manager Best Practices Group, collaborating with discretionary portfolio managers running similar strategies in other markets.
He joined Morningstar in 2005 and has held a variety of research, managerial, and portfolio management roles.
He moved to the Morningstar Investment Management Group in 2015 as Senior Portfolio Manager and Head of Discretionary Equity Strategies, Asia-Pacific, based in Sydney.
Prior to his current role, Mr. Bloomer was Head of Asia-Pacific Equity Research, managing thirty-plus analysts across Sydney, Hong Kong, Shenzhen, Mumbai, and Auckland.
In that role, he was primarily responsible for developing quality, independent, and fundamental research for internal and external clients.
He also contributed to global best practice development within the research group, including as a Chair of the Morningstar Global Economic Moat Committee, an internal governing body that oversees our competitive advantage analysis framework and ratings.
Prior to that, he spent a year away from Morningstar in South Africa where he helped start an equity management boutique as Head of Research and Assistant Portfolio Manager.
Before moving to South Africa, he held a variety of equity research analyst and management positions with Morningstar in Chicago, U.S.
He received his undergraduate degree from the University of Illinois.
