SPDR S&P Oil & Gas Exploration & Production ETF (het fonds) streeft ernaar de totale rendementsprestatie van de S&P Oil & Gas Exploration & Production Select Industry Index zo dicht mogelijk te benaderen. De S&P Oil & Gas Exploration & Production Select Industry Index vertegenwoordigt het deel van de S&P Total Markets Index dat betrekking heeft op de olie- en gasexploratie en -productie in de subindustrie. De S&P TMI volgt alle gewone aandelen van de Verenigde Staten die zijn genoteerd aan de New York Stock Exchange, American Stock Exchange, National Association of Securities Dealers Automated Quotation (NASDAQ) National Market en NASDAQ Small Cap exchanges.
