Portfolio construction is monitored and managed through risk controls such as overall tracking effort relative to the portfolio’s benchmark and maintaining discipline on targeted sector exposure, position size and capitalization. Fixed income strategies begin with a view of the economic fundamentals, which may be influenced by the Federal Reserve Bank’s policy intentions, inflation intentions and growth expectations and then key risks are identified, such as regulatory risks, merger and activity risks, and sovereign or contagion risks. These views lead to decisions on how to position a portfolio on the yield curve, opportunistic sector allocations to take advantage of any price discrepancies and, ultimately, security selection. Securities are generally selected by identifying securities with a low probability of a negative credit event, using a proprietary financial ratio model to identify purchase and sale candidates, and searching the market for individual pricing inefficiencies.
