Irani is currently the Co-Chairman at the American University of Beirut.

Dr. Irani has previously held positions as the Chairman & Chief Executive Officer at Occidental Petroleum Investment Co., the President & Chief Executive Officer at Occidental Oil & Gas Holding Corp., and the Chairman & Chief Executive Officer at Occidental Chemical Corp.
He was also the Executive Chairman at Occidental Petroleum Corp.
from 2011 to 2013.
Additionally, he served as the Chairman at Canadian Occidental Petroleum Ltd. from 1987 to 1999.
Furthermore, Dr. Irani has served as a Director at KB Home from 1992 to 2007, and as a Director at Lyondell Chemical Co. and the TCW Group, Inc. He was an Independent Director at Wynn Resorts Ltd. from 2007 to 2018, and a Director at Wynn Las Vegas LLC.
He also held positions as the President, Chief Operating Officer & Director at Olin Corp., and as the Vice President-Research & Development at Olin Chemicals.
In terms of education, Dr. Irani obtained a doctorate degree from the University of Southern California in 1957, and an undergraduate degree from the American University of Beirut in 1953.
