Dr. Payne was Director of the Optoelectronics Research Centre of the University of Southampton and Chairman and co-founder of SPI Lasers.
In 1998, the Franklin Institute recognized this achievement and awarded him with its prestigious Benjamin Franklin Medal for the invention.
Dr. Payne is a Fellow of the Royal Society and the Royal Academy of Engineering and was awarded the CBE in 2004.
He heads the ORC (a facility containing over 60 research laboratories and more than 150 full-time researchers).
Dr. Payne led the team that invented the erbium-doped fibre amplifier, the enabling technology for dense wavelength division, multiplexing and the growth of the internet.
