Destination Medical Center Economic Development Agency is a 20-year, $5.6 billion public-private initiative established in 2013 through a partnership among the state, city, Olmsted County, and Mayo Clinic. The agency aims to transform Rochester into a destination for health, wellness, and medical innovation by leveraging Mayo Clinic’s medical expertise to drive economic growth, job creation, and tax revenue. The private company is based in Rochester. The initiative focuses on six development sub-districts, including Discovery Square, an urban life science hub fostering biomedical research, education, startups, and established companies collaborating with Mayo Clinic Ventures. The comprehensive development plan integrates healthcare, commercial, hospitality, retail, mixed-use development, arts and culture, recreation, education, and transportation improvements to create a vibrant city. Key projects include Discovery Walk, a pedestrian-friendly parkway, and historic preservation programs supporting renovation and business recruitment in Rochester’s historic district.
