HIC focuses primarily on the high-tech industry, particularly on emerging sectors at the crossroads of IT advances and consumer demand. They invest in sectors such as TFT LCD, digital home equipment, wireless telecommunications, fiber optics, portable media, storage and medical technology. The bulk of their investing is done in the greater China region with half in Taiwan, complemented by investments in the US. The group's investment strategy includes maintaining a cash hoard which allows them to invest in emerging start-up companies or other opportunities, regardless of exit possibilities afforded by market conditions. HIC invests primarily in startups, complemented with investments in larger companies, both listed and unlisted. They acquire minority stakes, generally up to 20% interest, and are hands-on managers who seek board representation. Their targeted investment horizon is five years, after which they look for an exit through an IPO in Taiwan or in the US, an M&A, a block trade to a third party or a buy-back.
