Accessible Resources for Independence (ARI) is a consumer-controlled, community-based non-profit organization serving people of all ages with disabilities in Anne Arundel and Howard counties. The non-profit company is based in Glen Burnie, MD. ARI operates under the independent living philosophy, emphasizing self-direction and consumer control, with a majority of its board and staff being individuals with disabilities. The organization’s mission is to maximize independence and enable people with disabilities to lead self-directed, productive lives. ARI provides five core services common to centers for independent living: advocacy, independent living skills training, information and referral, peer mentoring, and transition services. These services empower individuals to set self-determined goals, improve skills such as budgeting and employment readiness, access disability-related information, receive peer support, and transition into education, work, or community living. Additional programs include veteran directed care for veterans to self-manage long-term supports, housing navigation to assist with finding affordable accessible housing, and an assistive technology program offering funding assistance, portable ramp loans, and technology demonstrations. ARI also supports individuals moving from nursing homes back into the community and those at risk of institutionalization. The organization collaborates with local housing entities and provides regional, state, and national resources to support older adults, individuals with disabilities, and caregivers. ARI encourages community involvement through volunteering, board nominations, donations, and social fundraising.
